The Preparation
A few weeks ago I had my first speaking event as a Certified Professional Coach who specializes in career transition and wellness coaching and it was an amazing experience! Things weren’t smoothly getting ready for it and up to a few hours prior to the event. While I was excited, I was also nervous. I didn’t want to share too much about me as something kept saying “stop talking about you.” Also, I was worried about the turn out as it’s my first one and kept thinking: “people don’t know me; many of my friends couldn’t make it, what if no one shows up or just one person…..”
I am grateful for the support of my coaching colleagues and friends who were offering to help and sending me well wishes as I prepared. The night before the event I was going over my presentation with a friend and fellow coach and when I asked him for feedback one of the things he said to me was to think about how I can add and share more of me in the presentation. He mentioned that he had read my first blog post that I shared a few days ago and he said reading it, him and those who read it will know who I am. That made a huge difference for me but still I was struggling with talking too much about me in the presentation.
The Core Message of My Authentic Self: I Am Love and Light
I had been thinking about what is the core message of my best authentic self and I wrote down that I am love and light and I want to share my love and light with everyone around me; I then knew exactly what I needed to do. I said to myself, I do talk a lot to myself 🙂 “Stop worrying about who, how many people will show up. Just concentrate on your presentation and be ready to give whoever shows up exactly what they need.” I thought to myself “I’ve been getting ready for this for a while now and it’s time to have the courage to show up and be seen no matter how it turns out.” Interesting that my presentation was about living our values and one of my core values is courage.
Allowing Myself to Show Up and Be Seen as Love and Light
During my prayer and meditation an hour prior to the event, I asked God to use me and make me a vessel of his love, light and peace in order for me to give everyone who comes exactly what they need and share my love and light with them. And that’s exactly what I did and everything just flowed. I even shared more about me that I had planned to as I allowed myself to show up and be seen.
After my presentation and the discussion I got a chance to speak with all the attendants and they said that it was great and they all loved when I shared about sending love and light ahead of us daily and ended the event by sending them love and light. One woman said it was powerful.
When we allow ourselves to show up and be seen, we allow others to experience our authentic selves and we inspire them to do the same. Sharing this powerful and inspiring quote by Brené Brown: “Vulnerability is not about winning, and it’s not about losing. It’s about having the courage to show up and be seen.”
