“I’ve deepen my spiritual practice but why isn’t everything rosy???” You may have thought that once you’d deepen your spiritual practice, it would be smooth sailing from then on and you’re now realizing that it isn’t the case. Actually, you may feel like things have gotten worse and thinking this isn’t what you expected. I know the feeling; I’ve been there and sometimes I say “why is this happening, I need a break please.” And I’m living one of these moments right now.
The following are four things I’ve learned and some tips I’ve found helpful as I’ve deepen my spiritual practice:
1. Pain/work is required for transformation
While I knew about the work part, I didn’t get for a while that transformation involves pain. I’ve really gotten that pain makes me grow and it sends me a signal that it’s time for a change and that I’m growing. Not easy to accept. I’ve learned that the easiest way to deal with pain is to let go of resistance and surrender. One of my favorite gospel song from Cece Winans is I surrender all; I listen to it often especially when I’m going through a tough time.
2. Do your best, let go and trust in the process
I’ve learned that all will be well, to do my best, let go and trust in the process. Life is ebb and flow; many times you are going through a rough time and it seems really dark. While it’s not easy, trust this moment is happening for you. Do your best and trust that a higher power that wants the best for you is handling things on your behalf. I heard something the other day from author Arianna Huffington and I thought it was so powerful and true. I’ve learned this as well and it is exactly what I’ve been doing “I do my 10% at 100% and the rest I leave up to God.”
3. Believe all great changes are preceded by chaos and be patient
A few years ago I would have never said this. However, I’ve learned it to be true that all great changes are indeed preceded by chaos. While it is not easy and can be very uncomfortable, I find myself expecting something huge and amazing to happen sometime soon when I’m going through a tough time. I can get impatient too at times. 🙂 Meditation, listening to uplifting songs, dancing, and visioning helps me in these moments. It takes having faith in knowing a higher power is working on bringing the miracle you’ve been asking for and that you are never alone, angels are always around you.
4. Be gentle with yourself
While you go through this process of deepening your spiritual practice and growing your faith that all is well and always will be, be gentle with yourself. If you find yourself having a bad day, tell yourself it’s fine. It’s okay and healthy to allow yourself to feel whatever emotion is coming up for you. Listen to it; it can guide you toward your next move at times. I’ve learned that allowing myself to feel all my emotions and listening to them allow them to pass sooner rather than resisting them. As author and researcher, Dr. Bréne Brown says, when we numb the feelings we don’t like, we’re also numbing ourselves from feeling the ones we like and want.
This is a beautiful and enlightening journey you are on. It has and will continue to be bumpy many times. However, it is definitely worth it. Currently as I’m going through this moment of uncertainty and dancing with the unknown, I remind myself that it will only keep getting better and I’m growing.
These moments are preparing you for the next phase of your life, so dance even if it is in the rain as the sun will come out soon! 🙂
