Shooting Happy Video with My Zumba Class for an Organization’s Wellness Program

This post is personal and I must admit I wasn’t sure about sharing it yet. However, I’ve chosen to be vulnerable and share myself with people when I chose to fulfill my purpose of empowering others. I’ve experienced receiving what I needed through others sharing themselves. I hope you’ll receive something from reading this.

I’ve chosen to stop teaching zumba on a regular basis. This wasn’t an easy choice and I’ll admit, the voice in my head still sometimes asks: “what are you doing?”

Zumba and My Desired Lifestyle

It recently became very clear to me that the lifestyle I desire isn’t one that I’m allowing myself to have by teaching Zumba regularly. I want to be location independent, travel, work from my laptop and cell phone and teaching 3 Zumba classes per week doesn’t work for me.

What Led to My Choice

I had reached a point during winter when I started thinking, this isn’t what I wanted and I’m not happy with having to stay put especially I’m not a fan of cold weather. I really enjoy teaching Zumba, which is more dancing. Dancing is important for me and that’s what drew me to Zumba in the first place. It allows me to be myself, let loose and completely let go. It is one of the things I do that allows me to show up as my true self.

First I thought maybe it’s time for me to step out on my own instead of working for a gym and asked myself how can I do it remotely? I started looking into teaching Zumba virtually although it didn’t sit well with me as I enjoy being with people. I’m an energetic and passionate person and it really shows up in my classes. I need to be in the same room as my class. After praying, meditating, having EFT Tapping sessions with Hanna Nikolausson (please see below for Hanna’s Facebook page) and reviewing some contents from Marie Forleo’s B-School (an online program that teaches you how to run your business online); it became clear to me that dance will always be a part of me but it wasn’t going to give me my desired lifestyle. I truly got that at least for now, teaching Zumba regularly isn’t in alignment with my vision for me and even my business as it also taking time away from my coaching and other things I want to explore.

Finishing Strong

After I made the choice and made it known, many things started happening that made me question my choice. I love my students, I’ve gotten use to them and will miss them and teaching. I started subbing for another instructor at a different location, new people started coming to my class at the gym and people really loved my class. They would ask when I was coming back or where else I teach on a regular basis. No wonder that voice in my head was making me question my choice at times. One of my regular classes that I had been with for over a year through a wellness program for their organization chose to shoot a video of my class to the song Happy by Pharell Williams for their wellness program.

Recently, as we were nearing the end of the online business program I’m enrolled in with Marie Forleo, we got an e-mail from Marie about finishing strong and she shared her story as a fitness instructor finishing strong. I was truly able to relate to it and I truly got that’s what I had been doing. While I’m not sure if I’ll ever teach regularly again, I know that zumba/dance is part of my personal brand and that’s what I wanted to leave people with.

Making Room for the New

I taught my last classes last week, it’s a sad and liberating feeling. I’ve been telling others and myself I’m making room for the new. I get that in life there’s always something to lose when we gain something. Think about it, [tweetable]each time you gain something you lose something as well. It’s about choosing what matters most to you at the time.[/tweetable]It’s dancing with the unknown and it’s exactly what I’m doing as I don’t know for sure what’s next. I just know that by letting go of teaching zumba regularly, I’m making room for something new that will bring me closer to my desired lifestyle.

I hope you get something out of me sharing this. In life you need to regularly check-in to see if you’re living a life in alignment with your vision, goals and values. You can have what you desire; it’s a matter of releasing what’s no longer serving you, doesn’t fit at the time and making room for what you truly desire.

I would love to hear your thoughts; did you get anything from this post? Share your own experiences making room for the new in your life. If you enjoyed this post, please share on social media and with anyone you know may benefit from it.

Love and light!

  3. Congratulations on your new life! The path of new beginnings are always… Pure yet scary. I left behind a life I knew was unhealthy for me and moved continents to start fresh. It has been the best decision I’ve ever made.

  4. Nadjeeda, I feel you. I am also going to do the same thing next week. I will close our office location down. I still have 8 more days but it breaks my heart already. Like you, I realized, I wanted to really just stay at home and work from home as a virtual assistant rather than sit in our office all day thinking about the kids. I realized my dreams are bigger than our office. I have been at that place for 3 years and it was a dream that came true. Hubby painted the walls and there are lots of memories including that it served as an internet connection for all Typhoon Haiyan survivors in our area. I feel like I am letting go of a piece of me. Your post has given me light that I too can do this. That its okay to let go to make room for the new! Thank you for sharing your story. You inspired me.

  5. Hey there Nadjejda I’m proud of you! I do understand your feelings and your Decision to make a change in your life – for your life. This is a Big Girl move! I believe that as we are spirit lead and though we may not see the whole picture we grow from the experience. I say it like this “If we never release the little that’s in our hand we can never receive the greater”.
Jesus teaches us in Matthew 25
“16 “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. 17 The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. 18 But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money.
19 “After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. 20 The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.’
21 “The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together![c]’
22 “The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more.’
23 “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’
24 “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. 25 I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’
26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, 27 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’
28 “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”

  7. Hi Nadjejda – Kudos to you for staying true to yourself. And your quote “when you lose something, you also gain something new” its so true. You have made space for something fabulous to come in that is more in alignment with who you are now. We often find it difficult to let go of something that we had put our heart and soul in, but for which, you now no longer feel the same joy. We feel guilty on some level – but we forget that with each life experience, we are always evolving and growing as a person, so what mattered so much to as a a year, 2 years ago etc – we have organically moved on from, whether that’s something we do, outgrown a friendship, a lover etc.. our heart knows it’s time to let go but our head hasn’t caught up yet (or is it the other way round! 🙂 – So i love this post and so resonated with it – as i was in a similar position earlier this year when i had to finally let go of something that was no longer bring me joy – but it was for the best and i am now reaping the benefits of making that much needed decision 🙂 So Thank you for sharing and inspiring others that it’s ok to change your mind! 🙂 xx

  8. Hey Nadjejda, I am so very proud of your courage to listen to the voice inside you and act upon it, not really knowing what it will bring; but trusting that it will not steer you wrong. In order to live a more fulfilled life, in your(our)continued quest to find our authentic selves, we must self correct from time to time. I did something like that some years ago when I left a very successful professional life with really high visibility for something I really didn’t think I wanted, but felt like it was whatI was supposed to do. My friends and family thought I had lost my mind, but 20+ years later, I am really happy, have moved to several cities and what do you know, I even found another professional life that I thrive in as well. You will be great in whatever you do… you are genuine and share of yourself with others and it will always, always come back to you! Stay in touch.

  9. you were talking about dancing when you said this: “it allows me to be myself, let loose and completely let go.” but it equally applies to the new lifestyle you will have when you are location independent. my family and i became true global nomads last may when we sold our permanent residence, and it’s been a wonderful ride. wishing the very best for you – hurrah for following your heart!
